In Remembrance of Mark Tompkins

Portrait of Mark Tompkins

ARC West Midlands was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Dr Mark Tompkins, who was awarded his PhD from the University of Birmingham in July 2025 for his research on Older People and Unpaid Carers’ Experiences of Hospital-at-Home. Mark had moved to the USA with his husband, where he was working as a clinical social worker. His online obituary can be viewed here.

Mark thoroughly enjoyed his time as a PhD student within ARC West Midlands and was appreciative of the support and guidance provided by Dan Lasserson and other colleagues. He was extremely proud to have gained his doctorate.

His PhD supervisors, Robin Miller and Denise Tanner, have since worked to finalise a journal article that Mark had begun, “in tribute to a valued colleague who was committed to working towards positive social change through his social work practice and his bourgeoning research – and who had so much more to offer.”
