The current application deadline is Monday 30 March 2026 at 10:00am.

About the Programme

The NIHR INSIGHT Programme for the West Midlands studentships will provide you with valuable research training. You’ll expand your understanding and develop knowledge and skills so you can ultimately join the research workforce needed to support high quality research that improves health and care, and benefits society and the economy.

The studentships can be undertaken  full-time or part-time, depending on the course and the university chosen. The studentship will pay for your tuition fees for the advertised duration of your course. It will also provide you with a tax-free stipend of £20,780 pro rate (so £10,390 per year if you study part-time). This can be paid to you or your employer. See further information below.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • Tuition fees for your part-time or full-time programme beginning in the academic year 2026-27.
    • We cannot pay additional fees incurred should you take longer than anticipated to complete the programme. If you experience challenges during your programme that may prevent your completion on time you must discuss this the INSIGHT team (insight@contacts.bham.ac.uk).
    • You may not defer your funding start date. If your circumstances change between acceptance of a place and the start date of your course you must discuss this with the INSIGHT team (insight@contacts.bham.ac.uk).
    • Application to the university course of your choice is separate from application for the INSIGHT studentship. We advise you to apply for your course at the same time as applying for the studentship.
    • When you have accepted the offer of your studentship award and you have accepted your university place, we will inform the university formally that we agree to pay your tuition fees.
  • A tax-free stipend of £20,780 per annum.
    • This is designed to make it possible for you to undertake your degree successfully. It may allow you to work part-time instead of full-time. Alternatively, it may compensate your employer making it easier for them to give you study time while you are employed full-time.
    • This is paid to you, or your employer, in instalments by the university with whom you are registered.
    • If you are undertaking your degree part-time you will be awarded £10, 390 per annum.
    • If you take a leave of absence from your studies your stipend will be suspended for the duration.
    • If you withdraw from your programme, you must inform us immediately and your stipend will be stopped.
    • You are not recommended to apply for a postgraduate master’s loan as well as taking the stipend. Some of the course codes associated with INSIGHT funding mean that the courses are not eligible for post-graduate master’s loan.

NIHR INSIGHT Programmes for the West Midlands studentships are intended for newly qualified or early career professionals who have recently completed a programme leading to registration with one of the listed regulatory bodies. This includes:

    • Recent graduates from healthcare professional and social work undergraduate programmes, including those graduating in autumn of 2026. You can apply for this funding even if you are expecting to graduate, even if this is close to the start date of your MRES or MSc programme.
    • If you are eligible to register, we would expect you to do so. We appreciate that there are some professions who may need to complete post-graduate requirements prior to registration. We would expect you to be working towards this.
    • Health, Public Health and Social Work Professionals who have been working in practice for up to five years (this period includes relevant professional experience within the UK and overseas).
    • If you have taken a career break you may still be eligible if you have only practiced as a registered health or social care professional for five years or less. If you wish to discuss eligibility contact the programme team on INSIGHT@contact.bham.ac.uk.
    • If you originally trained overseas and have more than five years of relevant professional experience and subsequently registered  with one of the eligible regulatory bodies in the UK you are unlikely to be eligible.
Full-time students
  • You are expected to complete your studies in 12 months from the start of your degree.
  • Your stipend will be paid in regular instalments (monthly) over this time.
  • If you require an extension to your studies you will be liable for the additional tuition fees and we will be unable to continue your stipend.
  • If you need to take a leave of absence from your studies, you must let your course director know immediately. They will arrange for your stipend to be paused and recommence when you restart your programme.
  • If you decide to work while you are studying full-time you should be aware that this will make it harder for you to successfully complete your course requirements.
  • We recommend that you do not undertake more than 12 hours paid work per week while you are doing a full-time course.
  • You are not recommended to apply for a postgraduate master’s loan as well as taking the stipend. Some of the course codes associated with INSIGHT funding mean that the courses are not eligible for post-graduate master’s loan.

  • You are not recommended to apply for a postgraduate master’s loan as well as taking the stipend. Some of the course codes associated with INSIGHT funding mean that the courses are not eligible for post-graduate master’s loan.
